31 Jan What are ESSER funds and how to use them.
ESSER stands for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, a federal program run by the Department of Education in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides financial aid to public schools nationwide. ESSER funds can be used to address pandemic-related learning loss and invest in infrastructure for safe operation. There have been three ESSER packages so far, totaling $189.5 billion:
- ESSER I: $13.5 billion approved in March 2020
- ESSER II: $54.3 billion approved in December 2020
- ESSER III: $123 billion approved in March 2021
What can ESSER funds be used for? ESSER funds must be used to address COVID-19, with at least 20% used for learning loss. Possible uses include:
- Furniture/equipment for safe in-person instruction (e.g. desks, screens, PPE)
- Outdoor furniture/equipment for increased outdoor activities (e.g. picnic tables, benches)
- Additional personnel for safety/cleanliness (e.g. nurses, custodians)
- Health/safety equipment (e.g. air purifiers, sanitation stations)
- EdTech/remote learning tools (e.g. headphones, software)
- Furniture/equipment for after-school programs (e.g. tables, chairs)
- Additional educators/support staff
- Adaptive furniture/equipment for students with special needs.
