04 Sep How to Zip and Extract Files Using a Chromebook
Chromebooks offer support for zipped files. If you know where to look, you can easily create and open compressed files with this simple tutorial.
If you think Chromebooks are only for cloud computing, you might ignore the hard drive and the versatile features built into the operating system, such as file compression. Many Chromebook users overlook this handy feature and assume ChromeOS doesn’t offer support for .ZIP and .RAR files, simply because they are used to handling files differently on Windows and Mac computers. Whether you want to compress a class project or archive old assignment templates, use this easy trick to zip or unzip your files.
Compress a File
To archive files, navigate to your desired files in the file manager. (For complete beginners, use the Ctrl + M shortcut, open the Tools menu, and select File Manager.) Hold the shift key while clicking each individual file to select them all at once, and right-click to open a dropdown menu.. Choose “Zip selection,” which will compile all your files into a .ZIP folder.
Keep in mind, files in Google Drive are not stored locally, so the “Zip selection” feature will be unavailable until you transfer the files to your hard drive. A quick solution is to move the files to the Downloads folder for compression.
Extract a .ZIP File
Unzipping is where some users get confused because ChromeOS doesn’t have a menu option to extract all the files at once. Instead of treating the archive file as a folder located on your computer, Chrome OS registers it as a mounted external file source that you can browse, such as a flash drive. To access your file, transfer it to Downloads. Create a new destination folder, and copy or drag the contents of the .ZIP file to this folder.
Download Apps to Support More File Types
Chromebooks often get a bad rap for being limited, but in reality, the platform is designed to let you add and remove the functionality you need for a completely customized interface. You can support more file types or simplify the zipping and extraction processes by downloading free archiving apps from the Chrome Web Store. ZIP Extractor, Archive Extractor and Zip, Unzip are three popular apps to get you started.
