26 Jan ESSER funds use in K-12 schools
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds are federal grants provided to states and local educational agencies to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on K-12 schools. These funds were authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 (CRRSAA) .
The ESSER funds are intended to help schools with expenses related to the pandemic, such as purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE), implementing distance learning and hybrid learning models, and providing mental health support for students and staff. They can also be used for additional learning time, such as summer school, before and after school programs, and additional days of instruction.
Each state education agency is responsible for allocating the ESSER funds to local educational agencies, which then decide how to spend the funds. The funds are intended to be flexible and to be used to address the specific needs of each school district.
